Spider-Man Loves Mary Jane, and SO SHOULD YOU!
2007-05-29 16:49:45
Apparently this blog has just become a way to push my #*&$ on you guys, but here I go again! The SPIDER-MAN LOVES MARY JANE VOL. 1 HARDCOVER! This baby is BEAUTIFUL (if I do say so myself)! Written by the talented Sean McKeever, SPIDER-MAN LOVES MARY JANE is a captivating and fun story about Mary Jane's world and how it intersects with the life of your friendly neighboorhood Spider-Man! If you haven't read SMLMJ, then you're missing out, so pick up this book and LOVE IT! If you ARE a fan of the comic, then YOU TOO should pick up this book as it is the ultimate collection for fans! So far SMLMJ has only been reprinted in digest format, but with THIS book you get to see Takeshi's amazing artwork — OVERSIZED! Not to mention the stunning colouring by the lovely Christina Strain! Not only that, she offers fans a chance to see how she works!! That's right! In the back of the book, we've got some pages showing you the process she uses for colouring and for the special screentoning effect she often employs (those little dots)! Thanks for giving us a behind the scenes peek at what you do, Christina!

So go to your comic shop or book store and check it out!! WOO!! YOU KNOW YOU WANT IT!

PS This collects Mary Jane #1-4, Mary Jane: Homecoming #1-4 & Spider-Man Loves Mary Jane #1-5!

Happy Holidays!
2006-12-18 17:54:08

Just wanted to share this Christmas card we got from our intern, Chris, on his last day! He drew it himself! I think he got us pretty well (except poor Jeff, who, he would like me to tell you, is not that flabby or that bald)!!!

Happy Holidays everyone!!

Women of Marvel Part Deux??
2006-10-30 16:09:25

Some of you (all the ones that would like to remain among the living) enjoyed the Women of Marvel TPB that I worked so hard on and poured so much love into. Now I might (notice the word "might" - as I always say NOTHING is definite) be getting the opportunity to do a second one! I have some ideas for what stories I'd like to put in, but I thought maybe you guys would like to tell me what YOU'D like in there. Keep in mind I reserve the right to COMPLETELY IGNORE your suggestions if I don't like 'em. ;) But who knows, you might point me to something I hadn't thought of and would ALSO really like to have in a second volume!

In the meantime, enjoy this image of some toys I have at my desk!

Young Guns Reloaded!
2006-10-24 12:35:11
Just popping in to let everyone in on something that'll be coming out just a few weeks. It's the Young Guns Reloaded Sketchbook. You remember, back in 2004, we announced a batch of artists that we knew were going to take the comics world by storm. And I think were pretty spot-on, if I do say so myself. So what have I got for you this time? Well, can you say "Clayton Crain?" How about "Billy Tan" or "Simone Bianchi?" Watch the stands for this - it'll be chock-full (somebody must explain to me what a chock is) of pencils, sketches, and inks from six phenomenal artists!

Runaways! Live and in COLOUR!!!
2006-10-24 09:20:32

Check it out! Everybody's favourite Runways cover - in COLOUR!!! WOOHOO!! Yay Christina! She kicked this cover's butt! :) Enjoy!!!!

Runaways ROCKS!
2006-10-02 12:13:56

Hey, I posted the inks to the new cover for Runaways Vol. 2 — The Hardcover on other message boards, but I thought it'd be nice to post it here too for those who don't go to "other" message boards! Enjoy! (I sure love it!)

Holy Mackeral (sp.) redux
2006-09-15 17:18:27
It has been brought to my attention by the Incomparable John Dokes that I misspelled "mackeral" in a previous blog post - the correct spelling is "mackerel." I'm not proud, but I do own up to my mistakes. Marveldom, I owe you an apology for my poor spelling.

On to the questions! MattDicarlo asks "Any chance we'll see something more along the lines of page by page director's/writer's commentary in the back of trades?" Well, unfortunately, the confines of time and space prevent us from doing that for every trade. But do check out our Director's Cuts - Especially the recent Wolverine Origins and the slightly less recent Ultimate Wolverine vs. Hulk. Both feature commentary by writer Daniel Way and artist Leniel Yu, respectively. Every once in a while I'm lucky to get creators on board with commentary and, since you demanded it, I'm going to push that much harder for it on the next one! The Boys Down In Legal demand that I make no absolute promises, of course, but I am listening!

pkempson wants to know "How do you determine between doing Trade collections by title (like the House of M Trades) and doing them chronologically (Like the Age of Apocalypse 4 volume trades)? Is it based on the nature of the event, how well everything flows in either format, how long it's been since the actual even, or something else?" Well, pkempson, you kinda answered your question yourself. It truly depends upon the nature of the original material. HOM consisted of one must-read core story surrounded by a number of interesting but non-essential peripheral stories, so printing a collection of separate trades made the most sense. But AoA was so intricately woven that one big book would supremely enhance the reading experience! It all boils down to what we hope will make the best, most enjoyable reading experience for you! Here's to hoping we hit that more than we miss that!

Thanks, everyone, these are great questions. And might I add that you all look marvelous today? And you're probably better spellers, too!

Your questions answered
2006-09-07 18:04:55
I only got a handful of questions so far, but thank you for your response! So why waste time with an unnecessary introduction, on with the answers!

Julio_p_83 writes “How do you guy's figure out which books to put in trade? Is it by earning potential or popularity or what? I just thought it's be good insight as to how things get done.” Well, I asked Vice President of Sales David Gabriel, and he says ALL OF THE ABOVE (emphasis his) plus potential for movie tie-in or other new project tie-in. For example, as X3 was coming out, we hit the ground running, releasing a shiny new X-Men: Mutant Genesis Trade alongside the Uncanny X-Men Omnibus! Double trouble, yeah! Now, there’s no New Avengers movie coming out any time soon (although I’m sure you’re just as excited as I am at the prospect of an Iron Man flick), New Avengers is one of our top sellers, so we’re going to give the proper collected format attention it deserves.

DrObviousSo writes “Where do you get the bonus material like the intros? Is this paid work, or is there a lot of arm twisting, beer IOU's, and compromising pictures sent to significant others.” Well, Doc, nothing so unsavory. A lot of stuff goes into making the monthly books. And luckily our forward thinking editors look to save as much interesting material as possible, like character sketches, pencils, pitches and scripts. They’re more than happy to pass those things onto us when we need them. That said, you would not believe the amount of compromising photos I have in my possession.

Tarhaun writes ”i 've been posting this all over the message boreads and i wanna ask u guys does the lead singer of evenesence look like spider woman.” To this I say: What? Are you planning on photoshopping a Jessica Drew costume over a pic of Amy Lee? Because A)That's a bit disturbing, dude, and B)There's tons of websites out there that have that done already. I know, I found them all.

I like to end my blogs with a bit of an "uh?" feeling. Keep those questions coming, people!
