Taking it On the Road
2008-08-21 17:54:57
Made a pair of Road Trips this week, and I’ve brought you back some video.

This past Tuesday, after rescheduling it time and time again, I appeared as a guest on the Comic Book Club, the weekly comics-themed improve talk show hosted by the guys who do the Stack review videos over at Newsarama. Fortunately for me, the other guest this week was Wyatt Cenac of The Daily Show—who, in addition to being a comic book fan and very funny, was also a childhood friend of Brian K. Vaughan. This was sixty minutes of chat and reviews and audience questions and general tomfoolery, and a swell time was had by all. I brought you back a few seconds of footage so that you can share in the experience of being on this side of the experience.

Then, yesterday, to commemorate the release of AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #568 and the start of “New Ways To Die”, Jim Hanley’s Universe on 33rd Street (my comic shop of choice) hosted a signing with Dan Slott. I stuck my head in to pick up my book, and was astounded by an archaeological discovery as startling as the fact that the brontosaurus never existed, and that Pluto isn’t a planet: There, standing before me, lined up neatly as far as the eye could see, were actual comic book fans who liked AMAZING SPIDER-MAN and “Brand New Day!” Quickly I whipped out my pocket recorder, determined to capture this evidence on film before it evaporated into dreamlike tales of destroyed childhoods and broken hearts. And today, I share that footage with you. Like the Snufflalupagus, AMAZING SPIDER-MAN fans are real, and they actually exist!

More later.

Mission Accomplished
Well, I guess I could say that's that, there are people who like the Amazing Quasi-Man.

However, I never imagined that there was no audience for this alternate version of Spider-man. There always will be. Throw him an extra four arms for three issues a month. Have him wear the Web of Spider-man #100 spider-armor three times a month. People will continue to read. This is indisputable.

Guess what, I still buy the Amazing Pseudo-man. Especially because the "New ways to die" story line looks like its no longer on a hook. JRJR is the epitome of the original version of Spider-man.

I also have countless issues with Judas Traveler and his hetero-life mate Scrier. How else could they continue to sell 71,000+ per issue. I have the Ren and Stimpy issue where Spider-man fought Powdered Toast-man.

I'm waiting. That's all. I will continue to voice my views while I wait.

This is not spider-man....wait, why does Norman know Un-Peter is Un-Spider-man. Drag, that's another layer of unreliability in story telling. There is so much story that needs to be clarified. This is too confusing.

I'm off topic now.

Make mine again someday Marvel.

REMEMBER!
Mephisto DOES NOT HONOR HIS BARGAINS PEOPLE! HE is a PRINCE OF LIES!

And let's not forget that Spider-Man's identity is in the HANDS of a CRIMINAL! And that thug could have given Spidey's real identity over to Green Goblin.

Great clips Brevoort. Every week is a great blog!
Also, Thanks again for posting those previews a while back!

Brevoort! I need to ask you something.
Way Back on April 25th of this year (the day of my 18th birthday), I asked Joe Quesada if he would create a new symbiote of Spidey, and he said yes. I was wondering... at the back of the New Ways to Die issue, does it bring to light this fan request, or will I need to wait for a director's cut relating to this arc? :)

Posted by Aziroth on 2008-08-21 21:09:02
No one.
"Absolutely no one knows that Peter Parker is Spider-man. Not Daredevil, not the Avengers, not anyone. His identity is truly secret."

Straight from the 2-page spread about the new status quo.

So Eddie Brock, who in the real version, knew May Parker was related to Peter, (he even helped her with laundry once) has no idea now about Peter being Spider-man or why he was even Venom right....right?

Can of worms people! Can of worms!

Commence with the 2-minute Hate.

Surprise...surprise..

OMD hanger ons still lurk Tom's blog.

How sad that they still cling to these delusions after seven months.

Great starting issue by the way, Dan's been nothing but gold since January. :)

Posted by Dr. Chaos on 2008-08-22 01:56:13
Why are you all assuming Osborn knows Pete's identity just because he showed up in the apartment? I suppose it's possible, but more than likely there's a "surprise" twist and Norman's just looking to rough up Pete to get info about Spidey.

Tom, I'm a longtime fan (first issue I ever bought was ASM # 275) who's LOVING this new era. Keep the good times rolling!

I liked it!
I was a fan of #568! The backup was pretty cool too. Looks like Eddie Brock is set to be a player again, and looks to be a pretty prime candidate to be this new anit-venom, especially since Mr. Negative did "something" to him.

Now... Nobody said that Norman knows Pete is Spidey. He didn't walk into that apt and say, "Hello Spider-Man." Why don't we wait an issue and find out where this goes???

“Guess what, I still buy the Amazing Pseudo-m
This is the weirdest position a fan can have, and from time to time I have found out there people thinking like that. I mean, we all have followed a title that everybody says is crap, that we consider crap, but that at the end of the day we like and have a good time reading it.

But I have never understood the “I hate it, buy I still buy it” position. It is like saying that you rather will throw your money than trying something you actually will like. And, people, how are you supposed to make an statement if you actually acknowledge that you continue to buy?

That’s what the enemy wants! XD

Posted by freyes2000 on 2008-08-22 11:27:59
Coolhanddave, if you're buying a book that you hate, I doubt that Tom is going to listen to your advice on how you think he should change it. There's more than enough people (like me) buying it who DO like it.

I'm still waiting for the first BND TPB
I haven't given up on Spiderman, just on the weeklies. I had just assumed, perhaps wrongly, that a 3 times a month pace meant that trades would be coming out pretty rapidly as well. So far it's just been the hard covers though.

Posted by izzatrix on 2008-08-22 13:56:54
Well....
Here's the thing, all of the "Haters" out here were bombarded with arguments that we should give it a chance and that we would have no right to critique something we haven't even read.

I subscribe to the theory of testing before making my decisions. Now, that being said, my aim is not set on the quality of the current issues but rather on the gutting of the mythology and cannon. Although, I miss target a bit and hit upon the things I do not like about the Un-Spider-man. It is wrong of me to speculate on what the conclusion of a cliffhanger will be.

But back on point:

Heck, Ultimate Spider-man is not spider-man but I read that. Alternate versions of Spider-man are not the issue. I believe there is no real Spider-man anymore and I'd like that brought back.

Here's what I propose:

Publish both.

Twice a month put out the original ASM without its cannon gutted starting back at the time Mephisto showed up and have Pete and MJ tell Mephisto to Sod Off.

Twice a month we continue to get un-ASM as it has been.

Do this for a year. Let the sales decide.

I have no doubt there will be endless logistical problems proposed by this about who should do the art and write the story and is it fair to have JRJR do one and not the other (it wouldn't be) and other valid issues, but give it a chance Marvel.

Make mine dang it Marvel.

I mostly dislike OMD for any reason thats been said a million times, BUT that last Kraven arc and the new Brand New Ways to die issue were great...but, Thunderbolts "practicing" on immobile super hero dummies, um not so much, pretty weak.

Posted by ejulp on 2008-08-22 15:41:24
Why does my post have a "flag as offensive" tag under it...is it because I use the word "dummies" in it, lol...oh, and I meant BND not OMD, Freudian slip I suppose.

Posted by ejulp on 2008-08-22 15:43:04
Give it a shot
Publish Both in '09

Posted by coolhanddave on 2008-08-22 16:37:44
ejulp, every post has this "flag" tag under it. It's to filter out profanities and pointless attacks. Usually, some idiot will come in and flag every single post on the page, which causes them to temporarily disappear. In the meantime, some poor underpaid Marvel slave-intern has to go through every post to see if it really was offensive or not. If it's not offensive, it will reappear, this time without the flag tag.

Posted by Michael Heide on 2008-08-22 17:07:08
In speaking of that...
Brevoort, do you have the power to unflag posts in other people's blogs, or just this one?

In all honesty, I am getting dang tired of miscreants flagging every post, and bloggers like Justin Lambros and C.Baker are terribly inactive, meaning that no one can see the responses everybody posted on their latest entry (or just old entry in that case), because some jerk flagged all the posts.

Since the admins themselves likely won't be able to read our forum posts (because they still haven't recieved the pm's I sent them a while back; still sitting in outbox), I am gonna post a suggestion here, and hope it gets passed along to those in charge.

There needs to be a feature where posts on blogs like these can only be flagged when you're logged in, and when you DO flag a post logged in, it leaves a note for the blog master to find out who flagged what and when, and if the same person(s) are simply abusing the flagging feature, admins can strip away that person's ability to flag, or even better, have the option to temporarily ban the abusive flagger. In addition to that, Forum moderators should also have the ability to unflag posts that were wrongly flagged, and delete/edit posts that are offensive.

Hopefully, the implementation of such will prevent destructive miscreants from trying to prevent people from posting in the blogging entries, while making things a little easier for the people who run the blogs.

Yeah, Ejulp
Can't the Thunderbolts spring for a Danger Room? Its like the government privatized their training facilities and their costs were slashed.

"starve the beast"

I'm not going to bring up BND or OMD. I just wanted to say that the old guy with the hat off to the side of the booth in the second video was in front of me on the line to the Mark Millar signing last week. He gets around.

The last issue I ever bought of regular Spider-Man was way back when Romita Jr. did the Spider-Man reboot from #1. I'M SERIOUS. Then when I was back home in Greece last year, I bought a Greek Ultimate Spider-Man it had two issues in one. Something to do with Aunt May attending psychotherapy and Peter meeting the X-Men for the first time. It was crap. Bendis just doesn't do it for me.

But I bought this first issue of New ways to die, because all this Spider-Man internet controversy and heavy debating has just become too interesting to ignore. So my curiousity was stirred. And it had art by...Romiat Jr. So I bought it. I also bought a Supdermn/Batman comic that has all these tiny toons versions of the DC superheroes and really enjoyed it. Whoever hasn't bought it should really read it! The tiny Batman's origin was REALLY funny.

Anyway, I liked this. I don't understand why any of the magical rebooting needed to occur other than help get rid of the fact that Parker revealed his identity in those Civil War stories, and Harry really doesn't seem like he needs to be alive. And I also don't like how IMMATURE Parker seems to be when it comes to job hunting and paying rent. I don't know any of my 25 year olds (even the most immature ones) who are that picky and whiny about job hunting when they're faced with the reality of being EVICTED. And the Thunderbolts were handled in a way where it was a bit too inaccessible to me being a new reader hopping on again after how many years. I caught on to the Presidential campaign and rivaling Newspapers elemtnes and characters very easily. But the Thunderbolts status quo (and Osborn's connection) needed more development in this issue. Or at least is did to me. I like it. Apart from the identity thing, I still don't get how these stories couldn't be told with Harry still being dead, May never having a brush with death, and MJ simply being divorced from Peter instead, but whatever.

* OOps, I meant to say ...don't know any of my 25 year old friends and coleagues...

bnd asm
ok i know iam not the first to say this but didnt Harry Osborn die a very long time ago. Didnt his death set in the motion the well clone saga and his fake parent storyline. He was/dead. Sure, so was Norman but he came back, but there was a (bad) retcon for him returning. When father and son meet should they say, oh i dont now, gee glad your dead how did you come back to live? just wondering

Posted by jaffy on 2008-08-28 16:02:23
YUP!
Last week I posted:

"Now... Nobody said that Norman knows Pete is Spidey. He didn't walk into that apt and say, "Hello Spider-Man." Why don't we wait an issue and find out where this goes???"

And lucky me, I was RIGHT. See? Just don't jump to conclusions, wait until a story comes to and end and then form an opinion.

OH - and guys: They aren't going to publish separate continuity books. They already have all the way through November 2009 plotted. If you don't like this, then leave it on the rack. If you can handle what the current situation of Peter Parker's life, then buy it.

But don't whine and complain that you don't want to read it because something changed 6 months ago and you can't undo it.

The status quo of characters change CONSTANTLY. If you're angry with this, LEAVE IT. Keep tabs on it, and come back in a few years / months/ whatever when you think you'll enjoy it again.
