I hate to turn this blog into maudlin city all week, but that’s the luck of the draw. We’ve got one more person to remember before we can move on.

It’s been one year since artist Mike Wieringo passed away unexpectedly. Truly one of the nicest and most supportive individuals in the industry, Mike was just like his artwork—open, inviting, funny. His death at the far-too-young age of 44 was an absolute stunner, and reminds us all not to take anybody or anything in our lives for granted.

Despite the fact that he was often depressingly self-critical, working with Mike was an absolute blast. I loved his FLASH, his FANTASTIC FOUR, his SPIDER-MAN, and of course his co-creation TELLOS, done with his close friend Todd Dezago. Mike’s work very much cut against the grain of the times when he started, a period when most artists were struggling to make faces grimace more, add more and more hatch-lines, and bigger and more dangerous-looking weapons. That’s part of what made him stand apart, though, and what gave his work it’s appeal. He clearly had a distinctive approach, and he could tell a story like few others.

As luck would have it, I got this cover proof for the MARVEL APES #1 variant that we’re doing for the Hero Initiative today, featuring a drawing that Mike did for his art blog originally, before the MARVEL APES project was even fully-formed. It’s one last chance to see RIngo do his thing, and the proceeds go to a good cause.

On to more life-affirming subjects tomorrow.

He is missed
Never met him but 'Ringo did seem so giving. I would read his blog almost daily and he was always so good at sharing his thoughts etc. Thanks for the reminder, I can't believe it's been a year...

still about rememberings-I didn't knew the work of Mike Wieringo- I'd like to know if there is something planned for Dave Cockrum's ' The Futurians '.It's not that there 's not enough sci-fi books at Marvel, it 's just that 'Guardians of Galaxy' disappoints me for the moment.

From family member
Although a fan Marvel, the purpose for my post is to contact Tom B. I am a cousin you have not seen in years and a recent passage of an 94 year old family member led me on a web quest for some members of the family. If I am right we may be the last family members in this part of the country. I am noway near a regular blogger so please take my post with a grain of salt. Anyway, I am sure you can find my contact email from the account info. Just interested in contacting some family members. Thanks.

It's good to see Ringo's work adorning a new cover again. I wouldn't mind seeing you do more like that with his blog sketches, they were great!!!

This may be from a glitch but...
Brevoort, the latest news you posted on the Marvel North take over is gone... :? (Or maybe it was something I said in the blog LOL).

Anyways, I have seen some sketches of Weirringo's works on Wikipedia, and it sucks that he's gone. :?
